The two major California rivers, the Sacramento River and The San Joaquin River, meet at the Delta to join the salty waters of these two bays in the Carquinez Strait. In the 1800s, Benicia's location on these important waterways proved vital in the California Gold Rush and in the settling of California. In 1852, Benicia was the State Capitol of California. Over the years Benicia has grown and prospered and is now a suburban community of 28,000 residents. Benicias school district is a nationally recognized district of excellence.
